Track 7 from his self-titled debut album released in 1968 copyright Apple Records. It was recorded at Trident Studios in London and was produced by Peter Asher. Taylor was the first non-British performer signed to the Apple label but this was his only album released by them. He grew up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and took cello lessons before learning to play guitar at the age of twelve. He noticed his finger-picking style evolved with help from his cello lessons and the music of Woody Guthrie was an early influence. He was blessed with a mellow, soulful tenor voice that is instantly relatable. While in his mid-teens and vacationing with his family on Martha's Vineyard, he met fellow aspiring guitarist Danny Kortchmar and they formed a bond. He attended a prep school in Massachusetts but struggled in his first year and returned home to attend the local high school. There he joined his brother's band and they cut a single. He returned to the prep school for his senior year and began applying to colleges. Frustrated that he didn't see a path to follow his true desire, music, he became seriously depressed. He sought help by admitting himself to McLean Hospital, a psychiatric facility in Belmont, Massachusetts. Being there gave him structure and he described it as a lifesaver, like a pardon or reprieve. His stay there resulted in the army rejecting him for service in Vietnam. After nine months he left the hospital and moved to New York to reunite with Danny Kortchmar. They quickly formed a band and were soon regulars at the coffeehouses and bars in Greenwich Village. While there, he began using heroin and it developed into an addiction. He eventually became homeless and destitute, which led to his father coming to the rescue and returning him to North Carolina. After treatment for his drug addiction and surgery for damaged vocal chords, he decided to pursue a solo career. With help from his wealthy family, he moved to England and recorded a demo. At that point, his friend Danny Kortchmar gave him his big break by getting a friend of a friend to deliver his demo to Peter Asher, who was the head of A&R for Apple Records. Asher played the demo for Paul McCartney and George Harrison and they were impressed so he was signed to Apple and began recording this album. He relapsed on heroin during the recording sessions and returned to New York for treatment, ultimately admitting himself to another psychiatric hospital to deal with his mental health issues. This obviously led to a lack of live performances to promote the album and sales were poor, although it reached No. 12 in Australia. Written by James Taylor and produced by Peter Asher. Ain't it just like a friend of mine to hit me from behind? Yes, I'm gone to Carolina in my mind Karen, she's the silver sun, you best walk her way and watch it shinin' Watch her watch the mornin' come A silver tear appearing now, I'm cryin', ain't I? I'm gone to Carolina in my mind There ain't no doubt in no one's mind that love's the finest thing around Whisper something soft and kind And hey, babe, the sky's on fire, I'm dyin', ain't I? I'm gone to Carolina in my mind (In my mind I'm gone to Carolina) (Can't you see the sunshine, can't you just feel the moon shinin'?) Ain't it just like a friend of mine to hit me from behind? Yes, I'm (gone to Carolina in my mind) Well, dark and silent late last night, I think I might have heard the highway callin' Geese in flight and dogs that bite The signs that might be omens say I'm goin', goin' I'm gone to Carolina in my mind With a holy host of others standin' around me Still I'm on the dark side of the moon And it seems like it goes on like this forever, you must forgive me if I'm up and gone to Carolina in my mind (In my mind I'm gone to Carolina) (Can't you see the sunshine, can't you just feel the moon shinin'?) Ain't it just like a friend of mine to hit me from behind? Yes, I'm (gone to Carolina in my mind) Gone to Carolina in my mind And I'm gone to Carolina in my mind Gone to Carolina in my mind Gone, I'm gone I'm gone, say nice things about me 'cause I'm gone, south gone, gotta carry on without me I'm gone
