Il 30 novembre 1923, il bacino della diga era di nuovo di pieno: l’acqua raggiungeva i 38 m di altezza. Le perdite alla diga erano in continuo aumento e, come ad ottobre, vennero apposte delle tavole per evitare che l’acqua traboccasse dagli sfioratori e andasse a colpire gli spigoli dei piloni. Pochi minuti dopo le 7 del 1° dicembre 1923, il guardiano della diga stava camminando sulla passerella quando sentì un rumore di sassi che cadevano e notò una crepa in un pilone. Cercò di affrettarsi verso la sua baracca, dove si trovava il telefono per dare l’allarme, ma non fece in tempo. La crepa si allargò fino a diventare uno squarcio enorme, che trascinò con sé quasi 80 dei 260 m della diga e rilasciò sei milioni di metri cubi di acqua. La massa distruttiva di acqua colpì per primo l’abitato di Bueggio, travolgendone anche la Chiesa: parte del paese fu salvato da una sporgenza rocciosa che deviò la traiettoria della corrente. Fato ben peggiore subì l’abitato di Dezzo: la parte del paese sul versante di Colere fu completamente spazzata via, incluso il Santuario della Madonnina più a monte. Gli edifici sotto Azzone furono parzialmente protetti grazie alla presenza di un enorme masso erratico. L’acqua – ormai una fiumana di fango e detriti – proseguì la sua corsa distruttiva lungo la forra del torrente Dezzo, raggiungendo la Valle Camonica e devastando Mazzunno, Angolo Terme e la località Corna di Darfo Boario Terme.
