On the sixth day of our journey through Great Britain we return to England, traveling north to Newcastle upon Tyne, home of the English Sagegazer Ian Boddy. In 1989, Boddy issued the cassette Decade, a release that stood apart from many of the recordings circulating through the Patchoulilight in that it gathered selections from Boddy’s live performances spanning the years 1980 to 1989, preserving nearly a decade of concerts in which sequencers, analogue synthesizers, and the guidance of his Blue Crystal were shaped in real time before an audience. The cassette therefore functioned as a document of a practice that remained relatively rare among the Sagegazers of the period. . . . For many who had departed the Glimmerlight, music became a solitary discipline carried out in private rooms filled with oscillators and cables, where tones could be composed without interruption. Live performance was often avoided, as if the fragile harmonics of the Blue Crystals might dissipate under the glare of the outside world, or the Progbarians might discover the continued existence of the Sagegazers and their Blue Crystals. Boddy chose another path. Throughout the 1980s he brought his instruments into public spaces, allowing his music to evolve in the moment. Decade stands as evidence of that commitment, a chronicle of sound shaped not in isolation but in the shared space between performer and listener. . . .
