MossRehab is the physical and cognitive rehabilitation division of the Einstein Healthcare Network. Consistently ranked by U.S. News & World Report as a "Best Hospital" for rehabilitation, MossRehab serves people in need of rehabilitation to overcome spinal cord injuries, strokes, amputations and traumatic brain injuries. MossRehab opened The Alice and Herbert Sachs Therapeutic Conservatory at its Elkins Park, Pennsylvania campus in 2014 to expand and enhance its horticultural therapy program. The Conservatory features a 12 feet wide x 7 feet tall green wall installed with the LiveWall® Indoor Living Wall System. Maintenance is part of what makes the living wall a therapeutic asset. With guidance from staff, patients and volunteers grow, plant, and care for the green wall plants. Annuals are completely changed out once a year while other plants are changed periodically, six to ten planters at a time, as an exercise in supporting rehabilitation. Patients follow instructions to remove the inserts from the LiveWall modular planters, empty the growing medium and plants, clean the liners and planters, mix new growing medium, put it into the inserts, add the plants, and water them. Each is a meaningful task. As they follow directions and sequential instructions, patients regain cognitive abilities. Their functional abilities strengthen as they use fine motor skills to work with the plants. Social interaction during horticultural therapy provides emotional and physiological benefits. In supporting patients’ needs to connect with nature, each other and their own body, the LiveWall system is a central showpiece that doubles as a valuable rehabilitation tool.
