Cancer survivor, Gail Baron Simpson, shares her personal journey to treatment success in this in-depth interview with Precision Oncology specialist and CTOAM co-founder, Alex Rolland, and Michelle Morand, Precision Cancer Medicine Advocacy specialist and CTOAM co-founder. She had a rare germ-cell ovarian cancer, known to have no real treatments beyond surgery. 2. She had no further treatments offered and was palliative. so we used tumour DNA and RNA to identify drivers of her tumour. 3. The DNA found a rare BRAF mutation that had no targetable drugs...so we researched the mechanism of how it works and came up with an novel drug call an EGFR inhibitor which is not supposed to work on BRAF mutations...But because her BRAF mutation had a unique mechanism for causing cancer (dimerization), we concluded the EGFR inhibitor would work...and it did. 4. Then we found out form the RNA test that her ESR1 (Estrogen receptor) highly expressed, so we added Fulvestrant...and now she is getting a significant response and tumours are all shrinking. 5. And we have new ADCs and targeted treatments in case this stops working! Her doctor, and the doctor at the Mayo Clinic, are amazed that this has worked! Gail’s story is a wonderful example of what is truly possible when you advocate for better care. She is also a role model and an inspiration when it comes to self-advocacy and the effort she has put into fighting for her health.
