Hybrid Isn’t the Only Reason We’re in the Yard | Hybrid-Electric Project

Going hybrid-electric isn’t the only reason Tangaroa is in the boatyard. While we continue planning our hybrid-electric conversion and new battery bank layout, we’re also tackling the long list of “other stuff” that has to be done while she’s out of the water. In this episode of Operation Silent Running, we install a temporary engine room floor, start removing the old chain steering, measure for updated generators, address worn shafts that need replacing, repair a dinged propeller, and deal with aging portholes. This is real boatyard work on a 78-foot aluminum trawler preparing for a hybrid-electric propulsion system and long-range cruising. If we’re going to cross the Pacific and continue the Great Siberian Sushi Run, Tangaroa has to be ready from the inside out. We’re partnering with OSEA Boats on Tangaroa’s Hybrid-Electric conversion. This project is crowd-funded and supported by our online crew, not handed to us for free. We’re investing our own money into a system we believe in and documenting the entire build in real time—what works, what doesn’t, and what it actually takes to convert a 56-year-old aluminum motor yacht to Hybrid-Electric.
