The Lovelady Center Testimonials - Miss Brenda Spahn This video captures just some of the lives changed by God and The Lovelady Center. The Center began in 2004, when Brenda Lovelady Spahn began a Bible study for women in the Julia Tutwiler Prison. As time passed, she noticed that a large number of women released from prison re-enter within a short timeframe. The Department of Justice Bureau of Statistics recently reported that nearly 68% of prisoners are re-arrested within 3 years of leaving prison. Why? Faith-based programs and other community re-entry programs are proven to help reduce recidivism rates (when those who exit prison re-enter). In Alabama, women released from prison are given $10, a white shirt, and a one-way bus ticket back to the same county of their conviction. By and large, there is no meaningful transitional program that helps women exiting the justice system re-enter society. In 2008, Governor Bob Riley challenged Alabama to offer community re-integration programs; he even created the Alabama Recidivism Reduction Task Force in 2009, which asks for the help from faith-based initiatives such as The Lovelady Center. Tutwiler Womens' Facility was designed for a capacity of 400. Currently, Tutwiler's population is 956. The need for residential rehabilitation and community transitional programs is great. Women in county jails are increasing at alarming rates, most in need of drug rehabilitation that is largely unavailable. The Department of Justice Bureau of Statistics reports that around 68% of those who exit prison will re-enter within 3 years. The Lovelady Center also helps reduce the burden on the Justice System by accepting drug court referrals as an alternative to incarceration. The Lovelady Center keeps women out of prison, and keeps women from re-entering prison. Partnerships such as the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles, Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women, Life Tech (Parole Board transition program), drug courts, and others make our program successful by offering training and helping with program design. The Christian Post has reported that participants of faith-based initiatives show drastically lower recidivism to rates -- as low as 15%. This is drastically lower than that of the national average of 68%. Women who are released from prison are challenged by the prospect of finding long-term employment, housing, transporation, basic utility payments, adequate child care, and more. By providing tools for women to enter society as productive and esteemed individuals, and providing access to continued education, families are given the tools for success in their own lives. Likewise, communities benefit from the increase of individual families. Your support helps us unlock the dreams and opportunities for many women and children who are seeking to change their lives. Please help us keep the doors open and opportunities abounding through the volunteering of your time, the remembrance of our ministry in your prayers, the donation of any goods, and of course, your financial support!
