Video Summary: 00:00 Introduction The San Cristobal de la Habana La El Principe was reviewed using the Bespoke Unit Cigar Formula, a quantifiable review matrix. Furthermore, the cigars have been stored in a Boveda acrylic humidor with 65% Boveda packs for a period of three weeks to ensure that they were properly acclimated and ready to be evaluated. 00:55 Cigar Overview A relatively recent brand, San Cristobal de la Habana was revived in 1999 and is named after both a company that existed before the revolution as well as Havana's old name. The small El Principe was released in 2004. 02:08 Look & Feel The El Principe has a slightly box-pressed shape and an overall straight roll and a firm spring. It has a pale milk chocolate hue with a mildly oily sheen. Its body displays aromas of nutmeg, cinnamon and terracotta. 02:40 Prelight Compared to La Punta, the El Principe is generally looser with better airflow. However, its flavours aren't as pronounced, leaving grapefruit zest, cinnamon, and nutmeg. 03:12 Tasting Notes The first third consists of bay leaf, lemon zest, and coffee grounds. Meanwhile, the second third offers citrus thyme, turmeric, and pepper. Finally, the last third produces rosewood, olibanum, and labdanum. The mouthfeel is smooth, the astringency is balanced, but the palate stimulation does lean slightly towards the front of the tongue. 07:01 Burn The El Principe can heat up quickly so it's recommended that you take your time. Nevertheless, the draw is pleasant and doesn't tighten. The ash backbone can be surprisingly solid for such a small cigar, too. 07:43 Overall Experience The band and box are generally identical to the La Punta but the box will offer details about the El Principe instead. Meanwhile, you can expect to pay around $6.50 for a single El Principe cigar, which offers good value for a Cuban. It's an ideal cigar when short on time to digest following a business lunch. 09:16 Pairings Consider pairings like rib-eye steak, honey and soy duck salad or even salted peanuts if enjoying it as an apéritif. Meanwhile, it would go well with beer or espresso depending on the context. If opting for coffee, try having a grappa bianca alongside it to heighten the experience.
