Baby Irhana came from Guwahati, Assam seeing my website as we do a lot of spinal dysraphisms in newborn babies in Kauvery Hospital, Chennai. When the child came to us she actually had a shunt that was inserted there and it was infected. So this is a tube in the brain because of excessive fluid accumulation. So that required surgery first and that turned out to be multiple surgeries as the child had Chronic Infection in the Brain and had to be treated. The purpose of her visit to Chennai was for her Myelomeningocele surgery in her back which is actually a Congenital Defect that occurs in 10 to 15 per thousand children born in our country. Usually, this is a disease that comes in the lower socio-economic status in women during her pregnancy, it is usually identified but if it is missed during pregnancy children are born with these severe abnormalities. The family was not prepared for the duration of their stay and for the expense of having both Brain and Spine surgery. So we had to do some crowdfunding. We also have a project called "Thalirgal" which helps a lot of children with congenital brain and spine abnormalities which is through the Rotary Club of Madras North, it is an International Rotary project. So with the kind hearts and the broad pockets of a lot of people, we were able to crowdfund quite a large amount of money, as well as subsidies from Rotary, as well as from Kauvery Hospital and free surgery from my team of doctors, Pediatricians, Anesthetists, Plastic Surgeons we were able to do very successfully three operations in the brain and in the spine successfully. They expected to come for a stay of about one week and the child stayed with us for almost six weeks in Chennai at Kauvery Hospital and HAMSA Spine and Brain Rehabilitation center.
