After years of research and planning, the Peninsula Township Fire Department in northern Michigan is one step closer to replacing its aging fire station. The township board has approved a special use permit for the construction of a new facility, marking a significant step forward, though the deal is not yet finalized. "You've heard me speak at some length of the terrible working conditions that our employees put up with, particularly in the main fire station, station one," said a township board member during Tuesday night's meeting. The current building, parts of which date back to the 1940s, has long been outgrown by the department's needs.
