On July 16, 2017 shortly after the severe storms that swept across northeast Illinois, The Hooved Animal Rescue & Protection Society (HARPS), located in Barrington Hills, IL, received an emergency call from Libertyville, IL: A family’s small farm had been flooded by the overflowing Des Plaines River, and their animals were at risk of drowning. Upon arriving at the site, HARPS’s president Donna Ewing, and volunteers found a devastating scene: two barns, outbuilding, and several vehicles were submerged in floodwater; the family had managed to get their miniature horse and goats to the still-dry garage of their home, but the river was continuing to rise quickly. HARPS volunteers went to work, donning wet gear and waders, and using ropes, boats, and a lot of coaxing, to swim and ferry the animals to dry land. As terrified as the animals were at the sudden destruction of their home, they put their trust in the HARPS volunteers, making it through the four feet deep water. All the animals are now dry and safe at the HARPS rescue facility in Barrington Hills.
