Flatworms could reduce reliance on rats and mice in early-stage drug testing of antipsychotic drugs

Professor Vitaliy Khutoryanskiy (Professor of Formulation Science at Reading School of Pharmacy) introduces a new study which found that planaria - harmless flatworms found in ponds and rivers - react to brain medicines in ways similar to rodents. This adds to a growing body of evidence that tiny flatworms can be used to reduce the number of experiments on more complex animals, aligning with ethical guidelines.
