New homeless service center planned for vacant 3rd Avenue building in downtown Seattle

A new facility designed to address mental health, substance abuse, and housing needs for the homeless in Seattle is set to open early next year. Work has started to convert a vacant building at 619 Third Ave. into the Stability Through Access and Resources (STAR) Center. The facility will be operated by the Downtown Emergency Service Center (DESC), which also runs the nearby Morrison Hotel homeless shelter, and The Lyon, which provides housing for formerly homeless adults. “STAR Center will provide a pathway off the streets, into care, and ultimately out of homelessness for some of our most vulnerable neighbors,” said DESC Executive Director Daniel Malone. DESC estimates the facility will be able to accommodate up to 85 people, primarily homeless adults who have psychiatric and substance use disorders. The STAR Center is scheduled to open two months after the planned closure of DESC’s Navigation Center in the Chinatown-International District (CID).
