Max was eight when diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy, a severe heart condition. Doctors implanted a pump to keep him alive but warned his parents he needed a transplant to survive. Max was placed on the urgent transplant list. Max was on the list from January until August 2017. During this time, he campaigned for an opt-out organ donation system. By August, Max was critically ill, with his heart visibly enlarged. Finally, they received news of a donor heart from nine-year-old Keira Ball, who had tragically passed away in an accident. Max’s transplant was a success, and he continued to advocate for organ donation, leading to Prime Minister Theresa May declaring that Max’s Law will be on the statute books by 2020.
