My third clear in the R-Type series, after the first loop of the first one and Leo. You have several weapons at your disposal, which you switch to by collecting colored power-ups. However, anything that's not the "DNA" shot is kinda bad and you might as well just avoid them. Similarly, taking too many speed-ups can be a problem, you never need to be fast but you sometimes have to be precise, so it's best to take 1 speed-up and ignore the rest. 1 speed-up is great, 2 is just way too fast, I don't even want to think about 3. As with the first R-Type, the "force" will protect you from some enemy bullets and you really need to position it ahead of time to take advantage of it. In my opinion it's much harder than the first R-Type. Every level can be tricky in its own way and peak R-Type II difficulty is higher than peak R-Type difficulty (nothing comes close to the second half of the final stage from the second game, which will never not be scary, and stage 5 which I never feel good about). Like the first R-Type, it's one of these games that's overall not that hard as long as you don't die, but that becomes instantly hell after one death. A 1cc basically requires you to do it in one life unless you learned specific recovery strats, which I didn't do. I had many failed runs where I genuinely tried to recover, but ultimately couldn't. The difficulty of recovery, aside from the obvious fact that you're underpowered when respawning while there is no rank decrease, and the fact that there's only 2 checkpoints in each stage (at the very start, and near the middle), is the scarcity of the bits (the things above and below the ship) and of the "DNA" shot type. I think you only have 3 bits you can collect in the whole game, including one in stage 5 that you're likely to miss, and you ideally want both of them. The first bit appears right before the middle of stage 2, the second one in the first half of stage 3, and the third one near the end of stage 5 (I think, I just never care about that one since you can't have more than 2 anyway). Basically, if you die somewhere after the midway point of stage 2 (and will respawn just after the first bit carrier), you'll have to do most of the game with 1 bit, and it's likely that you'll only have one for the final stage because the stage 5 one if easy to miss, and good luck doing the final stage with 1 bit. The fact that the DNA weapon is rare also makes it very hard to recover, because you'll have to survive for a long time with a subpar weapon. I'm not even sure there's a DNA shot item in stages 2, 3 and 4 but I can be mistaken. You can survive for a while, but you will probably come across a hard part that will kill you eventually unless you were totally prepared. These two things make it extremely frustrating because even if you manage to get back to full power, the fact that you will still lack one or two precious bits or don't have the good shot will be detrimental in the long run. So basically in this game, once you grabbed the first 3 weapon items to get the DNA shot, you have to avoid all the weapon items and all the speed-ups, and it's another hard part of the game. Most of the game is doable with 2 speed-ups, but ultimately you'll probably face a part where you need precision and having 2 speed-ups is just way too fast. Sometimes, you have to be careful about where you kill some item carriers to make sure the item doesn't spawn at a terrible place (this can happen A LOT in stage 4). And you really, really don't want to die. Hitboxes can be weird sometimes and you get away with strange stuff, like the big ship near the end of stage 3. You really need this to survive and have to get used to your hitbox. And yes after the 4th boss I hit the wall and don't die because you're immediately invincible after killing it. I do this to avoid the speed-up. Second loop is your usual "more enemy HP, higher rank". I honestly don't plan to clear it, as the final stage is already pretty hard in the first loop and gets really silly in the second one, and because for that you need to survive for roughly 40 minutes without making one single mistake. Some parts are more fun to do in the second loop however. I played to see how far my loop 1 strats would carry me, then I accidentally grabbed a speed-up out of habit (you start with your end-of-loop-1 speed and want to avoid all speed-ups) which distracted me. Managed to recover, but got surprised by the enemies at the start of stage 2-2, for which I would have needed a new strat. I had 0 chance of clearing the second loop anyway, since I never practiced it. 00:00 - Intro 0:22 - Stage 1 2:48 - Stage 2 6:13 - Stage 3 9:23 - Stage 4 11:27 - Stage 5 15:21 - Stage 6 17:55 - Ending 19:19 - Loop 2 game over
