This webinar was held on February 18, 2026 at 1 ET. As the government moves to erase evidence of the contributions of African-Americans, Native Americans, Hispanic Americans, and other historically marginalized communities to US history and culture, LDAD hosted a conversation that affirms the importance of preserving and validating the truth about our past. This webinar featured two distinguished lawyers whose lives were shaped by courage, injustice, and an enduring commitment to the rule of law, discussing their very different journeys. LDAD Board member Nicholas Fels was a recent college graduate in 1964 who risked his life participating in the Mississippi Freedom Summer, a dangerous but important chapter in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. LDAD Board member Walter Hiawatha White, Jr. is an international corporate lawyer from a family that distinguished itself as it endured and surmounted profound bigotry as they created a legacy of resilience, excellence, and achievement. Nick and Walter explored how their experiences and moral courage influenced their approach to the law and their current work to protect our freedoms. Their conversation will underscore how the rule of law is strengthened—not threatened—when we address the past with honesty and why the true history of the United States is central to our understanding of justice and democracy.
