4K Video Walk: Exploring Downtown Ashland, Wisconsin’s Historic Mural Capital Ashland, Wisconsin, earned the title of “Historic Mural Capital of Wisconsin” in 2005, a designation by the Wisconsin Legislature, due to its impressive collection of over 20 vibrant murals that depict the city’s rich history. The mural project began in 1998 to celebrate Wisconsin’s Sesquicentennial, spearheaded by Mary Rehwald, Director of Lifelong Learning at Northland College. The first mural, the Asaph Whittlesey Mural, was painted on the former Ashland National Bank building, showcasing seven influential founders of the community, including Asaph Whittlesey, who founded Ashland in 1854. Local artists Kelly Meredith and Susan Prentice Martinsen led the effort, painting murals that highlight key aspects of Ashland’s past, such as its lumberjacks, railroads, military veterans, and the massive ore dock, once the largest steel dock in the world. These murals, concentrated in the eight-block Main Street business district—listed on the National Register of Historic Places—transform downtown Ashland into an open-air museum. The project grew through community support, grants, and donations, with murals painted on building walls and panels to ensure durability. Today, the Ashland Mural Walk is a year-round attraction, drawing visitors to explore the city’s history through art, with trolley tours offered in summer.
