Instead, you should wait and watch when the shield turns off, then use one Overdrive right after that, then wait for next shield to come up and wear off before throwing the next Overdrive. During shields I have been switching my ship to Bright Fall, since it can hit through the shield and continue dealing damage. The small red squares dropping are difficult to dodge and usually require defensive stone to get past of them, but there is also very small frame gap in between them that you can safely stand on to get past of them normally.
