🦋Notes🦋 Silk moths are moths in a group called Saturnidae which has around 2000 described species. Silk moths escape the cocoons using an interesting fluid that only dissolves silk as it is very tough however doesn't dissolve any other organic materials. The female moths only appear to breed once and continuously lay eggs until the abdomen shrinks due to them losing lipids that they stroked up as a caterpillar and they die, I estimated probably over 100 eggs per female and she seems to fly and deposit the eggs in several locations during the night probably in search of host plants and to increase the chance of the offspring survival as well as reduce the chance of inbreeding and to spread the genes. Males continue to fly every night clumsily breaking there wings as they become weaker over the days as they where not built to last and continue to find mates. My moths where hand paired as moths use pheromones to find eachother however in most house even with good ventilation and a fan it seemed difficult to get them to recognise eachother as a moth but when hand pairing them spreading pheromones one to another they accepted eachother. You learn a lot more being up close to the species, even more when they are in their natural environment which I want to be able to expirience. Eggs layed 30th September Eggs hatch between 12-14 days mine hatched on the 12th of October and most of the last on the 15th October.
