Horrible today: Magnitude 8.7 earthquake just hit Yellowstone Triggering a major eruption

Earthquake strikes Yellowstone National Park's oldest, hottest geothermal area. Yellowstone National Park's oldest, hottest geothermal area, a favorite spot for park visitors, was rocked by a moderate earthquake Tuesday night. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported a 3.7-magnitude earthquake near Mammoth, Wyoming, around 6 p.m. MST, close to the Norris Geyser Basin. Seismologists said several people in the Yellowstone area reported the quake. "This earthquake was typical of the Yellowstone area and does not indicate any significant unrest," the agency said after the quake struck. The National Park Service (NPS) said the Norris Geyser Basin is home to some truly extreme geothermal features. The highest temperature ever recorded in Yellowstone (459 degrees) was measured in a borehole at Norris, just 1,087 feet below the surface, underscoring the intense heat and activity in the area, the NPS added. There are very few thermal features in Norris below the boiling point of 199 degrees at this elevation. Norris shows evidence of having had thermal features for at least 115,000 years, according to the NPS. The features in the basin change daily, with frequent disturbances due to seismic activity and water fluctuations. The area is named after Philetus W. Norris, Yellowstone’s second superintendent, who provided the first detailed information about the thermal features. Although Yellowstone is frequently rocked by small earthquakes — an average of 1,500 to 2,500 per year — the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory notes that larger, more damaging quakes have also struck the area. The largest earthquake ever recorded in the park, a magnitude 6.0, occurred on June 30, 1975, along the north-central margin of the Yellowstone Caldera, a few miles southeast of the Norris Geyser Basin.
