On September 2, 1864, a group of citizens surrendered the city of Atlanta to Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman’s army. Five days later, Sherman opened up correspondence with the Confederate commander, Lt. Gen. John Bell Hood. In his letter, Sherman recommended the evacuation of non-combatants from the conquered city. Sherman’s request rubbed Hood the wrong way, and thus began an exchange of testy replies over a weeklong period.
