Anthony Dowell's matchless performance of the evil fairy Carabosse in the Prologue of Tchaikovsky's ballet 'The Sleeping Beauty'. Dowell is the personification of Disease and Death -- a visit from whom is all mothers' worst fear for her baby -- in this great en travesti rôle. He completely avoids the usual much-less powerful camp effect of other iterations. (The divine Monica Mason is also exemplary.) The part was first danced by Enrico Cecchetti on 15 January 1890 at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. Cecchetti is a storied pillar of ballet history and a contributor to the Royal Ballet's DNA via his work with Ninette de Valois. William Tuckett and Elizabeth McGorian as the King and Queen are impossibly beautiful and young (unlike in Perrault), and give deeply-felt, human performances, not the stiff cartoon cut-outs seen elsewhere. No King and Queen approach their interpretation, either. They are anguished parents everywhere, vulnerable, not royals aloof from universal experience; the Queen represents all women, in all times. Thus, they wear no crowns. Perhaps the most beautiful moment is when Carabosse collapses before a majestically serene Lilac Fairy, the power of good prevailing -- at least for now -- over darkness. 'The Sleeping Beauty' ballet is about our deepest fears and dreams, a shimmering constellation of symbols and metaphors. Only Love, awakened -- the highest form of Beauty -- can save us. Benazir Hussain -- La Fée des Lilas Jane Burn -- Canari qui Chante (Canary) -- The Fairy of Eloquence Genesia Rosato -- Candide (Candour) -- The Fairy of Purity Deborah Bull -- Coulante, Fleur de Farine (Wheat Flour) -- The Fairy of Vitality Gillian Revie -- Miettes qui Tombent (Breadcrumbs) -- The Fairy of Generosity Belinda Hatley -- Violente (Temperament) -- The Fairy of Passion David Drew -- Cattalabutte Conductor Barry Wordsworth deserves great praise for a driving, powerful orchestral performance. But if anyone knows the names of the young Messenger, or Carabosse's two main attendants, please leave their names in the Comments section. I couldn't find them! #Royalballet #SleepingBeauty #AnthonyDowell #Carabosse #ballet #ROH #entravesti #Tchaikovsky #fairies #Charlesperrault #Royaloperahouse
