Hundreds of tourists fled this morning from an advancing pyroclastic flow which was somewhat unexpectedly generated near Mount Etna's summit. This pyroclastic flow would subsequently race down Etna's southeast slopes at around 90 miles per hour, stopping only after it had traveled a full 3,260 meters. This might sound unusual to the common person as strombolian eruptions are not generally associated with pyroclastic flows. So, why did Italy's Mount Etna volcano produce its longest traveling pyroclastic flow in at least the last 35 years today? This question will be answered in today's video through the opinion and analysis of a geologist.
