We are living in a time when sensationalism has taken over journalism; when hysteria and sycophancy are peddled in the name of journalism. From being the fourth pillar of democracy, a large section of the national media has transformed into “fourth pillar of the establishment”. From being the voice of the voiceless, we are witnessing its transformation into a mouth piece of the ruling elite. And in a strange reversal of roles, the supine media wants to hold the opposition responsible for the failures of the government! The so-called journalists do not tire of singing praises of those in power, making the main stream media their veritable propaganda arm. As soon as you start taking favours from the government and praising it instead of holding it to account for its failures, you cease to be a journalist. We strongly reject this “establishment media”. The media has evolved from print to electronic media to web to social media but it has been consumed by “selfie journalism” and “nationalistic journalism” hyper-ventilating at the drop of a hat. This TRP-led “journalism” is the scourge of democracy. It is unacceptable! Our initiative, the Free Press, is a miniscule attempt to restore the responsibility of journalism. We will strive to once again, make delivering news to the people, the primary function of journalists. We will provide unadulterated news, opinions of experts and analysis of the media landscape to spread awareness of the blatant propaganda by the “establishment media”. We pledge to keep press free and journalism clean; it is our motto, and we aim to always uphold it.
