In 2018, the Black Seed Brothers’ Tyrell Dixon and Kiana Miles founded Health Station, a Harlem-based business created in response to a lack of fresh produce within their largely black neighborhood. They began by selling black seed watermelons grown in the South, and over time have expanded their offering in a dedicated effort to provide nourishing fruits and vegetables to the local community. These crops are often harvested from the black-owned Mt. Pleasant Acres Farms in Preston, Maryland – the location of which was a ‘station’ on the Underground Railroad. Through the playful yet thoughtful incorporation of culturally significant foods, such as okra, chicken, black eyed peas, and collard greens, Kiss My Grits creates a dialogue about perceptions of certain African American foods – foods within dishes that often hold stories of resilience, struggle, celebration, and family heritage. Especially within historical context, the journey from seed to harvest, and the communal aspects of food preparation and consumption can be seen as a form of social and cultural art.
