Transcript: Hi! I’m Jenny. I want to talk briefly about menopause (points to sign with “menopause” on it). My sign is --- (shows signs period-stop) because it means monthly periods stop. Before a girl gets her period, while she’s growing from a baby until around 8, 9, or 10 or a little older, her body already starts changing. Breasts start to develop and vaginal smells and discharge start. This is before the period starts, a period of 3 – 5 years or so. The same things happens before menopause (pulls out a sign with the word “peri-“ so it is in front of the first sign with “menopause”). It’s called peri-menopause. Just like before a young woman starts her period, there is also a time of between 2, 3, 4, or 5 years or so, before menopause happens. The body goes through changes. There may be missed periods, hot flashes, or other things happening. It could be 12 months with no period – and then a period happens, maybe 1 time, or 2 or 3 times, then nothing for a while, and again another one. This is called peri-menopause (points to signs that show “peri-menopause”). When the periods and other symptoms stop for good, or when a hysterectomy is done, that is called “menopause”. Menopause doesn’t happen the same way for every woman. Some never experience hot flashes, while others have intense hot flashes that leave them drenched from head to toe, like my sister, for instance. In contrast, my hot flashes only happened on my head and neck areas, maybe a little on my upper shoulders. My sister would be soaked from hot flashes and have to change her clothes and bedding at night, while I could just toss a sheet or blanket on and off me to cool down. So this process (pulls out the sign with “peri-“ to show “peri-menopause”) is very neat as far as how young girls go through 3 – 5 years of body changes before their periods start and become regular, and in the same way, women go through a 3 – 5 years of changes before they reach menopause (pushes sign with “peri-“ out of view, so “menopause” is remaining, gives a thumbs up).
