Filmed and released in 1980, “Abaphuciwe” (The Dispossessed) documents forced removals of black people from South African cities and “white-owned” rural areas, in a sophisticated system of economic exploitation. It shows how Apartheid stripped people of land and rights, fragmenting opposition and forcing them to accept work at the lowest possible wages. It contains rare footage of demolitions, police pass raids, child slave labour on farms and conditions in remote rural resettlement camps. The stories of the people themselves are given primacy – African women and men place on record their bitter resistance to racial exploitation and dispossession. The film was based a booklet, “African Population Relocation” by Gerhard Maré, published by SA Institute of Race Relations, Johannesburg, 1980 ISBN 10: 0869821865 / ISBN 13: 9780869821862. The information about the various resettlement struggles filmed was drawn from Barry Streek’s “South African Press Clips” for 1979 (which is sadly difficult to find on the internet). We also received help from the Surplus People’s Project, particularly regarding Crossroads. Most of the footage was shot by Gavin Younge, with the help of Kevin Humphrey and Jaqui Nolte. Footage of the Modderdam demolition was shot by Dirk Hartford. Government propaganda footage was filmed off the TV. The film was shot on 16mm and in some places 8mm film, in sometimes difficult conditions. Apologies for the poor quality of images in some instances. The film has degraded over time, losing colour. The sound quality is also less than perfect. It needs subtitles which will hopefully be done soon. The speakers were not identified in the original film, for their protection. If information on the speakers can be retrieved, they will be credited.
