Gyeongju(경주), often referred to as "the museum without walls," is a city in South Korea rich in history and culture. Once the capital of the ancient Silla Kingdom, Gyeongju is a treasure trove of historical sites, temples, and artifacts that offer a glimpse into Korea’s glorious past. One of the most iconic landmarks in Gyeongju is Bulguksa Temple(불국사). This UNESCO World Heritage site is a masterpiece of Buddhist art and architecture, originally built in the 8th century during the Silla Dynasty. The temple’s serene atmosphere, intricate stonework, and stunning pagodas, such as Dabotap and Seokgatap, make it a must-visit for anyone interested in Korean history and culture. Nearby, Seokguram Grotto(석굴암), another UNESCO site, houses a magnificent stone Buddha statue overlooking the East Sea, offering visitors both spiritual and scenic beauty. In the heart of Gyeongju lies Tumuli Park(대릉원), home to ancient royal tombs known as tumuli, where Silla kings and nobles were buried. The park’s large grassy mounds are visually striking, and visitors can even explore the inside of Cheonmachong(천마총), one of the royal tombs that has been excavated and opened to the public. This tomb showcases fascinating relics from the Silla period, including a gold crown and various treasures. Gyeongju is also home to the Cheomseongdae Observatory(첨성대), the oldest surviving astronomical observatory in Asia. Built during the reign of Queen Seondeok, this stone tower was used to observe the stars and forecast the seasons. Today, it stands as a symbol of Gyeongju’s advanced knowledge of astronomy during the Silla period. Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond(동궁과 월지), formerly known as Anapji, is another significant site from the Silla era. This royal palace complex was once the residence of crown princes and a venue for important state events.
