Endemic Species are species of those plants and animals which are found in just one particular region and nowhere else in the world. In other words, it can be said that endemic species are those which are only found in a given region or location and nowhere else. It should be noted that the region which the species is endemic is called the “endemic site”. Endemic sites can be “national endemic”, a “geographical range endemic”, or a “political region endemic” depending on the location. Since endemic species are unique to a specific geographic region they are more vulnerable to extinction and require special conservation efforts. They need to be protected from predators, human activities, and climate changes. Examples of Endemic Species: Some examples of endemic species are lemurs of Madagascar and the tortoises of the Galápagos can be found only in that respective location. Kangaroos were originally endemic to Australia and were found nowhere else in the world. In the case of endemic plants, sometimes species become endemic due to habitat destruction.
