Born on February 25, 1841 in Limoges into a working-class family, his artistic aptitude showed early. As a teenager he worked decorating porcelain and painting decorative objects while taking evening drawing classes in Paris. In 1862 he enrolled in formal training, studying under the Swiss painter Charles Gleyre, where he made close friends with Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, and Frédéric Bazille. Along with them, he explored painting outdoors, capturing light and atmosphere in new ways. By the 1870s, Renoir was producing vibrant scenes of modern life—cafés, dances, leisure—marked by loose, colorful brushwork and a celebration of the pleasures of everyday experience. In the early 1880s Renoir traveled in Italy, among other places; this experience influenced a change in his style toward more solid form and structure. He experimented with more formal techniques, paying careful attention to line and contour in figures. Later, though suffering from debilitating arthritis, he adapted his technique and continued working—painting, and even collaborating in sculpture—with energy and dedication until his death on December 3, 1919 in Cagnes-sur-Mer. Throughout his life Renoir remained interested in the human figure—especially women and children—portraits, nudes, as well as scenes of domestic or festive life. His art is admired for its warmth, luminous color, sensuality, and for balancing naturalism with a joyful, decorative sensibility.
