Come join us as we take a day trip from Budapest, Hungary to visit the quaint village of Szentendre. This riverside town in Pest county (named after Saint Andrew) is only a 30 minute train ride away from the centre of Budapest and makes for a fantastic getaway if you're feeling a bit overwhelmed by being in the city. With plenty of museums, cobbled streets, churches and riverside location the pace slows down for foodies on a quest to just chill out. We ended up wandering around and eating most of the day starting off by devouring Langos (Lángos - Hungarian fried dough with various toppings) including ones with cheese and cinnamon. Afterwards we visited a wine cellar museum to cool down before tucking into a big lunch that featured goulash (gulyás) and red wine. We also made time to visit a Marcipan museum featuring enormous marzipan sculptures (some almost 100 kg in size) before finally chilling out by the riverside in a lawn chair waiting to catch our Danube river cruise back to Budapest. Overall, it was a great little trip and something we'd highly recommend for those with ample time to spare in Budapest, Hungary. 🚆🌊 Budapest to Szentendre Day Trip | Food, Wine & River Cruise Guide Join us for a fun-filled day trip from Budapest to the charming riverside town of Szentendre! Known for its colorful streets, artistic vibes, and culinary delights, this little gem is just a quick ride away and makes for the perfect escape from the city. Here’s everything we got up to, plus tips on how to get there, what to eat, and what to do! 🚇 Getting to Szentendre Our adventure begins with a metro and suburban train ride out of Budapest—just a 30-minute journey! We had a funny mishap with the tickets (make sure to buy the correct ones!), but soon found ourselves in the heart of Szentendre, soaking up its relaxed atmosphere and beautiful, quiet streets. 🥨 Breakfast Treats: Lángos & Pancakes First things first: food! We made a beeline for one of the town’s best lángos (Hungarian fried dough) shops, sampling both a classic savory version loaded with sour cream, cheese, garlic, and hot sauce, as well as a sweet, cinnamon-sprinkled pancake. Pro tip: arrive hungry—portions are generous and irresistible! 🐾 Exploring the Town & Making Furry Friends After our feast, we wandered up Szentendre’s picturesque stairways to discover scenic squares, historic churches, and panoramic views of the town. Along the way, we made some adorable cat friends—don’t forget to say hello to the local meow meows! 🍷 Wine Museum & Hungarian Goulash Lunch Szentendre is full of quirky museums, but we couldn’t resist the call of the Wine Museum. Nestled in a cool cellar, it’s a perfect escape on a hot day. After exploring, we enjoyed a house red wine and a hearty lunch—classic Hungarian goulash served in a mini cauldron and a cheesy chicken breast dish with potato wedges. The wine was smooth and the food was rich and satisfying! 🍭 Marzipan Museum: Sweet Sculptures & Tastings Next up: the Marzipan Museum, where edible art reigns supreme. From giant marzipan Mickey Mouse to Hungarian kings and even a German Shepherd dog, the displays are as impressive as they are whimsical. We sampled a tube of marzipan afterward—not everyone’s favorite flavor, but a must-try Hungarian treat! 😴 Siesta by the Danube: Chilling & River Views Feeling stuffed, we headed down to the shady banks of the Danube for a relaxing siesta in lawn chairs—iced lemonade in hand, perfect for an afternoon nap. Szentendre is all about slowing down and enjoying the simple pleasures. ⛴️ Cruising Back to Budapest Our return to Budapest was a highlight: a peaceful river cruise back to the city just as the evening light cast everything in gold. We watched the scenery drift by and reflected on a perfect day trip. 🚶♂️ Walking Back & Final Thoughts Instead of taking the metro, we enjoyed a sunset walk across the bridge and through Budapest, ending our day on foot. Szentendre proved to be a wonderful blend of food, culture, relaxation, and scenic beauty. 💡 Travel Tips & Must-Knows Getting There: Take the suburban train (HÉV) from Budapest—double-check your tickets! What to Eat: Try lángos (both savory and sweet), goulash, marzipan, and local wine. What to Do: Visit museums (Wine, Marzipan), climb to viewpoints, stroll the cobblestone lanes, and don’t skip the riverside nap. Return Journey: End your day with a Danube river cruise for beautiful sunset views. Have you visited Szentendre or have any tips for future travelers?
