This was a spiritual experience for me - Our Hotel room today in Dimitsana is set high upon a Cliff looking over mountains and the deep Lousios Valley with several monasteries. We hike, making our way down the steep mountain side to the monastery of Agios Ioannis Prodromos (respecting the rules, Ladies no shorts or trousers, men no shorts). It is a unique structure, hanging from a gorge-side cliff face, hidden away from view until you are directly beneath it. Its origins are in the fifteenth century. The chapel inside built into the cliff bears frescoes that represent the holy spirit (No photos allowed inside). Several paintings are amazing depictions of Christ. This chapel inspires awe and reverence, worthy of great spiritual respect. The views from the monastery balcony running outside are of rugged splendor. The surrounding landscape is beyond beautiful, characterized by rocky cliffs and vegetation. The monks greeted us when we enter the building, serving us water, sweets and coffee and conversation about any subject. They were very friendly and English speaking. They answered all our questions with a smile and we left with their warmest wishes and prays for us… whether you are a believer or not…This place conveys a personal reverence and gave me a special feeling. It was a tremendously spiritual experience. Returning to Dimitsana, we stop by one of the most unusual exhibits, the Museum of Water Power. Beautifully presented, its restored watermills remind us of the role of water power in the pre-industrial and early industrial economy of the region not just for grinding grain, but also for fulling and the production of gunpowder. We enjoyed the town, the only other tourists were Greek. Authentic food, great shopping, lovely setting and a place to explore and relax and remember.
