The creation of the AV fistula for the purpose of dialysis has very few and minor complications associated with this. Bleeding is one of the complications. But it can be controlled once the patient comes very early to the hospital and also extremely rarely patients can have Steal syndrome because most of the blood flowing back into the vein, half the blood enter distally into the hand. So when the dialysis is going on or when the patient is using the hand during work they will have pain and some ulceration. But these are small complications that can be tackled very easily. Some long term complications of AV fistula can present. Patients can present with high output cardiac failure because the blood can flow back to the heart and go for a cardiac failure. There are also other complications like fistulas may not mature. Fistulas may fail, in the sense once they keep on getting granulated in the same place they can get thrombosed. But these are complications that can be easily managed in our hospital.
