Country gospel artist from Mt. Airy, NC. --- Harley Matthews, well-known singer of gospel songs, was born in Mount Airy, North Carolina, on October 4, 1927. After having spent twenty-three months in the United States Navy, he began singing to his own guitar accompaniment. As Harley walked down life’s road with his guitar in his hand and a song in his heart, he found *an old country church* nestled back against the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. There he met a Man who would become the Master of his life, the Man who would lead, guide, and direct him for the balance of his life. This Man became his best friend—a friend who was loyal, dependable, and true. Harley has made this Man the object of his singing, and when I hear him sing “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” I know that he sings it from the bottom of his heart. Harley knew he would *never be lonely* and that he would never walk alone, and this has proven to be true because he has made a multitude of friends in various states and in Canada. Numerous churches have welcomed him because he has made *the old family Bible* the standard for his life. Harley Matthews was led by the Master’s hand through Virginia and into Pennsylvania, where he settled in a small community along the Susquehanna River. He has been a friend to young people, encouraging them to use their talents for God and has set a fine example for them.
