This forgotten cocktail is made with Rye Whiskey, Honey and Mint. It is essentially a modified Mint Julep. I first heard about the drink on the podcast, The Dollop. It was featured in the Marion Zioncheck episode. Marion Zioncheck was a Depression-Era congressman from Washington state. He was flamboyant and unhinged. He would fight any small injustice with the ferocity of a junk yard dog. He was impulsive and eschewed notions of decorum, properness and decency. To call him an avid drinker would be like saying Hunter S. Thompson had the occasional drink. Zioncheck was a debaucherous drinker. He was like a living-breathing version of a character from Fear and Loathing or something. And his wild, drunken honeymoon in Puerto Rico could've been called Fear and Loathing in Puerto Rico. There was a man setting out to hump the American Dream. His first drink invention was rum and hair tonic. Not exactly an appetizing combination. It's an almost unbelievable combination, almost like one that Joaquin Phoenix's character from The Master would mix up. However, his second drink invention was a 3:1 mix of Rye, Honey and some mint that he dubbed, the Zioncheck Zipper. But like almost everything else he did, he couldn't just stop there with a simple, yet satisfying drink. He had to take it to the next level. He fell in love with the drink, so much so, that he began holding press conferences for it. During one, he proposed that he was, "starting a campaign to convert congress to the Zioncheck Zipper." I'm not sure what that was supposed to mean and apparently the new men in the room didn't either. All of these escapades and more were covered to hilarious effect in episode #222 - Marion Zioncheck of The Dollop. The Dollop is a podcast where two comedians, Dave Anthony and Gareth Reynolds, explore both major and minor events from history. So, even if you're not one that finds history interesting, there are plenty of laughs to hold your interest or if you find the historical events too depressing, don't worry, there's a lot of sugar to help the medicine go down. As much as Dave, Gareth and—in this episode—Wil Anderson made fun of the drink, it turns out that it's a really good combination. I mean, it's a essentially a play on a Mint Julep, so what could go wrong? This version is most likely a little more refined than what Zioncheck was mixing up for reporters in a drunken fervor, but even so, it's still pretty easy to throw together, just three ingredients and only one spirit. For the honey, according to the newspaper accounts, I'm pretty sure Zioncheck was using undiluted honey. I like making it with a 3:1 Honey Syrup ( • How to Make Honey Syrup ) that way it's easier to pour, but still extremely full flavored. The honey I used in the video was a local Avocado Honey, which is why it's so dark. Honey is made from several nectar sources including blueberry, clover, orange blossom, etc. They all have slightly different flavors and colors. Feel free to use the one you like best. I just really like the way the molassesy mouthfeel of this varietal works with the spiciness of the Rye, but any honey will do in this one. You could build this one in the glass, but I like to muddle, mix and chill it in a mixing glass, then strain it in my glass so that I don't suck whole or hunks of mint leaves up into the straw. It just makes for a better sipping experience, but if you want to bypass that step, I'm not going to get in your way. This drink is surprisingly great for being invented by a feral lunatic and really easy to whip together. It's also easy to scale it up if you're making a bigger batch for a party or something. Once you try it, it might just give you the confidence that you'll be able to convert congress to the mighty power of the Zioncheck Zipper. Viva La Zipper! Cheers! Recipe: 1.5 oz Rye Whiskey 0.5 oz Honey Syrup 5-6 Mint Leaves (plus Sprig for garnish) Muddle mint leaves in the honey syrup. Add Rye. Stir briefly with crushed ice.
