Quick Facts: UN and the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict

Skirmishes between Azerbaijan and Armenia returned in the form of serious clashes in which nearly 5,000 people died, indicating the seriousness of these crises, which are mainly based on ethnic and civilizational differences after 22 years since the war between Azerbaijan and Armenia ended. The pivotal role of the states supporting this crisis and the possibility of things going opposite, as is the case in many historical stories, most notably the First World War, constitutes a great danger and an indication of the possibility of this limited local conflict turning into a bloody regional or even global war. The current conflicts in the Nagorno-Karabakh region and the conflicts that followed after the Cold War share several characteristics, among them the interference of external parties for several goals and motives, the most important of which is the interrelatedness, interests and competition, the most important of which is between Russia and Turkey, as it is the main fuse for the conduct of this conflict and as a front that is easily affected by what is going on on the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides. The United Nations had a limited role in this case while Russia had the major role succeeding to broker a ceasefire between Azerbaijan and Armenia to end this conflict with Nagorno-Karabakh under the Azerbaijani power.
