This video shows the first demo of the prototype VR version of the SaDVR (Strike and Dip Virtual Reality) Tool. In this video I display the basic functionality of the SaDVR tool. The user can grab and position the compass around the 3D environment. The user can also rotate the face of the compass similar to how the face of a real world compass can be rotated. Once the user has positioned the compass in the way they want, they can save strike and dip measurements from the compass orientation. While grabbing the compass, the user can hold down the trigger of the controller to make a preview arrow appear on the compass. This arrow displays the direction of the current measurement the compass will save data from when the save strike or save dip menu buttons are pressed. When strike or dip data is saved a large arrow is placed in the 3D environment along the strike or dip vector. This environment also contains a large example of how strike and dip relates to the right hand rule. This example is a large grey cube with a purple outline of a hand placed across the front. A strike and dip arrow set is also placed across the front of the cube to show how strike and dip vectors relate to hand placement when using the right hand rule. This video also displays a 3D model of a geological outcrop from Sketchfab called the Tarlair Arch. The user can teleport onto outcrop models like these and then place the compass along various faces of the structure to measure the strike and dip of those faces. Ongoing development is being done on this VR version of the SaD tool. As new developments are made I will be posting new demo videos in the future. The SaDVR (Strike and Dip) tool is an VR experience created for the purpose of helping students learn about taking the strike and dip measurements from 3D models of geological structures. With this tool, students can learn what strike and dip measurements are as well as practice taking those measurements using a variety of geological structure types from all around the world.
