The President and the Defense minister are speaking with the Ambassador hoping for the US to say something before they lose the elections. So the US is doing them the favour of their support. But I want to make clear that this election is not going to jeopardize the relationship between the US and Nicaragua, its government and its people." Ticuantepe 5. Medium shot of man lighting fireworks STORYLINE: Nicaragua is back on the international scene in the run up to the country's November 4th presidential elections. Presidential Candidate Daniel Ortega from the National Sandinista Liberation Front (FSLN) ties the polls and tends to advance as the principal political party to win the election. Since Ortega lost the presidential election in 1990 and 1996 the FSNL has tried to project a different image of the party from the classic revolutionary leftist ideology that governed the country in the 1980s. This process has been lined by its links with a variety of other political parties promoting a "mea culpa" image recognizing the mistakes made in Ortega's last term in office. There are different interpretations of this new image, one that intends to show the evolution of a Sandinista party towards a new political era in the country and second as an attempt to capture those voters tired of the current political strategies of the last governing party. Enrique Bolanos of the governing Constitutionalist Liberal Party (PLC) is Ortega's main competition. FSLN and PLC share the electoral spectrum in the country showing a tie between the parties in the polls.
