📚Go beyond the cover with Tilting at Tomes. Join Ben for scholarly but accessible literary analysis of the complex, the surreal, and the profound works that define our culture and history. Contemporary Black literature is currently reassessing recent history and offering a vital discussion of our national character through the language of the African American literary traditions. We will be reviewing six literary fiction recommendations from contemporary Black authors published within the last six years...also there's a bit about Postmodernism. Our journey will take us through Oakland, Portland, and beyond the internal weight of social pressures and community history. Join me for a brief overview, a personal review, and a short analysis of each novel as we examine the "stock-taking impulse" defining some of today’s best fiction. As an Americanist, I’m fascinated by the "stock-taking impulse" found in these recent works. We dive deep into the following titles: Deesha Philyaw, The Secret Lives of Church Ladies: A masterclass in character depth that challenges church dogma and explores the sacred within the secret. Angela Flournoy, The Wilderness: A multi-generational look at friendship and the quiet ways global crises intersect with our everyday lives. Jason Mott, A Hel of a Book: A National Book Award winner that uses postmodernism to address trauma and the tragic reality of "invisibility." Vincent Cunningham, Great Expectations: A political Bildungsroman that uses the Obama era to reflect on our current state of disillusionment. __ Chapters 00:00 Introduction 01:10 Night Crawling 07:25 Skin and Bones 14:19 The Secrete Lives of Church Ladies 19:33 The Wilderness 27:35 Hel of a Book 36:27 Great Expectations __ __ Featured Books Nightcrawling by Leila Mottley Skin and Bones by Renee Watson The Secret Lives of Church Ladies by Deesh Philyaw The Wilderness by Angela Flournoy A Hel of a Book by Jason Mott Great Expectations by Vinson Cunningham Works Cited Cummins, Anthony.
