GENERAL: Date: 24 June 1972 Circuit: TT Assen (NL) RACE DATA: The Assen 1972 TT was the seventh race of the 1972 World Championship motorcycle racing season. The race was held on 24 June 1972 at the TT Circuit Assen near Assen, Netherlands. The race was traditionally held on the last Saturday of June. In Assen, Jan de Vries failed to win his home race. His Van Veen-Kreidler pulled a bit better against the fairly strong wind, but Ángel Nieto's Derbi ran faster with the tail wind. Together they immediately made a big gap with the competition and Nieto showed a few times that he could slipstream past de Vries from the knee bend. In the last lap, de Vries had a considerable lead, but Nieto managed to close the gap, pass the knee bend and win. Nieto and de Vries had almost two minutes ahead of the third man, Harald Bartol (Kreidler). During the 50cc race of Assen, Paul Lodewijkx (who had already driven an international race in Zandvoort) returned after his serious accident in 1969. He already had major problems with his Jamathi during the training sessions in Assen and retired on the second lap. RESULTS TT ASSEN: 1. Angel Nieto (Derbi) 29' 23" 5 2.
