The DC input side of an inverter is typically connected to a large internal capacitor regardless if the inverter is on or off. A fully depleted capacitor will act like short circuit and a spark will result when it is connected to a battery. If the LiFePO4 battery is turned off prior by its BMS, there will be no spark. However, powering on the battery by the BMS, such as the popular JK brand, there will be an inrush current and a short circuit error code is triggered. In this video, a 20mA 12V LED was connected permanently across the most negative cell and the inverter negative terminals (or between the BMS’ “B-“ and “P-“ terminals) to pre-charge the inverter capacitor to 90% or higher, mitigating the above issues. In the process, the LED will go from full brightness to almost darkness. The parasitic load will be roughly a milli-amp. Note that the LED comes connected to an internal current limiting resistor. The inverter capacitor will remain charged until the circuit is disconnected. This is for educational purposes. Adopt at your own risk.
