Mother - a Tribute Bharatanatyam Dance by Vidhya Subramanian preceded by The Ten-Armed Human: Women in India Today a Talk by Prof. Ipshita Chanda at Embassy of India 2107 Massachusetts Ave NW Washington, DC 20008 on Monday May 12, 2014 from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM -- Multiple facets of motherhood explored through Bharatanatyam, Indian Classical Dance. -- Multiple facets of women in contemporary India explored through a Talk. Vidhya Subramanian, an eminent Bharatanatyam artist, is acclaimed for her sensitive choreography and emotionally charged performances. Trained under gurus S.K.Rajarathnam and Kalanidhi Narayanan, her artistry has earned appreciation all over India and in Germany, France, UK, Russia, Afghanistan, Kenya and USA. In her charismatic creativity one witnesses a strong belief in the validity of choreographic structure combined with openness to new influences. She holds an MA in Theatre Arts. A dancer who has dabbled in theatre and film as well, she has enriched her repertoire with expressions of narrative and movement. www.vidhyasubramanian.com Ipshita Chanda is the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) sponsored Visiting Professor and Chair of Indian Studies at Georgetown University, Washington DC. Before coming to the US, Ipshita worked as the Professor at the Department of Comparative Literature, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, where she received her PhD. Her areas of interest are Comparative Literature Methodology, Theatre, Orature, African and Indian Culture. Her writings include 'Packaging Freedom : Feminism and Popular Culture' (Kolkata 2002); 'Shaping the Discourse : Women's Writings in Bengali Journals 1864-1947 (Kolkata 2013) and Selfing the City : Women Migrants and their Lives in Calcutta (forthcoming 2014).
