The first type is thrown upside down on the potter's wheel, almost like a little bowl, and splitting the rim to form the flange and the lip- and the lid sits in a gallery on the pot. That lid is trimmed when leatherhard, and clay is attached for a knob, and thrown to shape it. The second lid is thrown right-side up, and has a knob formed at the time of throwing.
