Similar to its predecessor, Nioh 2 is an action role-playing game. Players can create their own playable character, who is a hybrid born of a yōkai mother and a human father, granting the protagonist many abilities related to yōkai adapted from traditional Japanese folklore. Soul Cores allow players to use yōkai abilities once the cores are purified by visiting a shrine.
