Shiho-Nage performed as a defence against a Shuto-Uchi (knife hand attack), Tanto (knife) and baseball bat forehand. Shiho-Nage can be literally translated as "Four Direction Throw", but is also sometimes called the "Sword Throw" because of the similarity with the movement that one makes when hitting with a (Japanese Samurai) sword, like in Iaido. This technique is these days best known and most widely practiced in Aikido, however the version demonstrated here is based on the Shiho-Nage described in the EBo-No-Kata of the Dutch Jiu-Jitsu system by Mario den Edel and Wim Boersma In this video, two versions of Shiho-Nage are demonstrated. One version where Uke (the partner, the attacker) is literally thrown (Nage) and another version where Uke is merely taken into a control grip (this version is safer with the knife). In the first version the grip on the attackers hand/arm is allowed to slip away slightly, to give him the opportunity to make his breakfall. In a real self-defence situation it would just dislocate or destroy the wrist, elbow and/or shoulder joints. Be careful when practicing! This footage was filmed by Marc Smeets from Ethos Films.
