Sales of pirarucu leather products provide a livable income to hundreds of Amazon families who also keep the forest healthy because it protects their livelihood. On the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, the Nova Kaeru tannery processes about 50,000 skins from legally-caught giant pirarucu or arapaima fish a year.
