Nevado de Toluca, México's fourth highest peak, rises above the Toluca basin about 80 km West of Mexico City. The broad stratovolcano, also known by the Nahuatl Indian name Xinantécatl, has a 1.5-km-wide summit crater open to the east. A large dacitic lava dome in the crater separates two lakes. 0:00 I was picked up at 5:20 in Mexico City And quickly drove out of the city And onto the highway We turned onto the wooded highway 10 near Toluca And turned onto the dirt road toward Nevado de Toluca And got ready for our climb at Parqué de los venados 0:43 The climb began in the woods of Parqué de los venados 3625m at 7:25am We came out of the woods and walked along the road And then descended slightly Before starting the uphill climb again 1:30 We came into the open at 4000m with views of the surrounding mountains We could see the summit ridge coming in from the right We took a refreshment break after hiking 2:15 And looked back at the way we had come thru the green forest We hiked up a side scree slope 2:26 And reached the ridge at 4150m We could see the summit ridge and summit ahead 2:39 Many climbers were visible on the final summit ridge as we climbed The cloudy conditions arrived as we neared the col of the crater 3:18 We arrived at the col looking down on the crater with the Lago del Sol below 3:36 And the view of the final rocky summit scramble ahead Dangles arrived at the rocky summit 4529m at 12:30, 5 hours from the trailhead 4:20 Guide Cristian, Dangles and Jerome Ryan on the Nevado de Toluca summit 4:27 We descended the slippery scree slope to the Lago del Sol in the crater 4:39 Looking down at the Lago del Sol (Sun Lake) We reached the Lago del Sol (4192m) after a 70 minute descent We walked clockwise around the lake From the lake we climbed about 100 vertical metres 5:20 And looked back at the Lago del Luna (Moon Lake) And walked back to our waiting car in a hail storm
