What does it mean when we have happy employees, and what does it mean when we have engaged employees? Do they mean the same thing? In this episode of Know the Difference, we are going to explore the key differences between what it means when we are successful in creating happy employees, and what means when we are successful in creating engaged employees. In recent years, we have seen a shift in business focus toward investing in efforts and strategies that will create employee loyalty, retention, and improved performance. However, the benchmark many are using to show progress in these areas may be prioritizing the wrong thing. Let’s start by first defining Employee Happiness and Employee Engagement. Employee Happiness refers to the level of joy, contentment, and cheerfulness that employees have with their jobs and toward their employer. This level of joy and cheerfulness often present as a positive opinion of their work, co-workers, and employer, leading to a lasting desire to go to work. Good workplace morale is often an outcome of employee happiness. Now, Employee Engagement refers to the level of optimism, enthusiasm, and motivation that employees have with their work and from their employer. This means that employees are motivated by their work, their team, and their employer. This level of motivation and enthusiasm often present as increased work performance, and a lasting desire to do a good job. Productivity and motivation are often the outcomes of employee engagement.
