This switching layout is based as closely as possible on John Allen's Timesaver Puzzle. I am trying to build this layout using common materials as much as possible rather than buying ready-built components. The track design and full-size printed template was done using Templot 2.0. I have hand laid all the track using HO code 83 rail soldered to PC board ties with wood ties added last. This is my first attempt at hand laid track and I have learned a lot. The road bed is 1" wide black foam weather stripping bought at Home Depot. Today, I finally got all the feeder wires run from the bus wires to the track so I can finally run some trains. Next step is to install hand-made turnout throws made primarily from piano wire. After that, I will be adding Kadee uncoupling magnets at the beginning of each track section where rolling stock may be spotted. Lastly, I will be painting everything and adding scenery, assuming I choose to do so.
