A quiet New Year’s Day spent inside my tiny ninja-style tea room on a Subaru Sambar kei truck. In this video, I celebrate the beginning of the year with simple Japanese traditions. I decorated Kagami Mochi (traditional rice cake decoration) and prepared a bowl of Ozoni, a special New Year soup with mochi. I finished the meal with a cup of warm Amazake. New Year in Japan is often not loud or glamorous; it is a calm pause from everyday life. Families gather, the TV stays on all day, and many people watch the Hakone Ekiden (a famous relay race) — or fall asleep halfway through.
